What's the difference between M4A and MP3?
Both are compressed audio formats; M4A (the AAC codec) is more efficient at equal bitrate, but far less widely accepted outside the Apple ecosystem. MP3 remains the one format that plays absolutely everywhere — that is its whole point.
How do I convert an iPhone voice memo?
Share the memo to Files or send it to yourself, grab the .m4a, then drop it here: it comes back as an MP3 ready to share. For voice, the default bitrate is more than enough.
Will I lose quality?
The conversion goes from one compressed format to another: a slight technical loss exists, inaudible at 192 kbps and above for speech and everyday music alike. If the file is precious, keep the original M4A to one side.
Will a DRM-protected M4A work?
No: old protected iTunes purchases (M4P) are encrypted, and no legitimate converter can read them. Voice memos, your own recordings and recent purchases go through without a problem.
