About this tool

Adding VAT to a net price, or working backwards from a gross figure, is a daily calculation for freelancers, small businesses and anyone checking a supplier's invoice. This calculator handles both directions at any rate — 20% standard and 5% reduced in the UK, 0% for zero-rated items, or whatever rate applies where you trade — and shows net, VAT and gross together.

Enter any one of the three amounts and the other two follow instantly. Nothing is sent anywhere, there is no sign-up, and each figure can be copied in one click for pasting into an invoice or a spreadsheet.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get the net price from a gross price?

Divide the gross by 1 + the rate. A £120 item at 20% VAT is 120 ÷ 1.20 = £100 net. The classic mistake is subtracting 20% of the gross, which gives £96 and is wrong.

What VAT rates apply in the UK?

20% is the standard rate, 5% is the reduced rate (domestic energy, children's car seats, some home improvements) and 0% covers zero-rated goods such as most food, books and children's clothing.

Can I use it for other countries?

Yes — the arithmetic is identical everywhere, so just type the applicable rate: 19% in Germany, 20% in France, 21% in the Netherlands, 23% in Ireland, or a US state sales tax rate.

What is the VAT registration threshold?

It varies by country and changes over time, so check with your tax authority. Below the threshold you generally cannot charge VAT — set the rate to 0% here to price accordingly.

Is it really free, with no sign-up?

Yes — the tool is free, needs no account and has no usage limit. Processing happens locally in your browser, so your data never leaves your device.
