Since iOS 11 the iPhone saves photos as HEIC: half the size of a JPG, but rejected by half the websites, apps and print shops out there. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is signed up for: your pictures are decoded and re-saved on your own device, which matters for family photos, photographed ID documents or insurance evidence. The default 90% quality produces a JPG that looks identical to the original; a collapsed setting lets you push it higher or lower depending on what the file is for.

What exactly is a HEIC file?
It is the default photo format on recent iPhones and iPads (High Efficiency Image Container). It compresses better than JPG at the same quality, but support outside Apple's ecosystem is still patchy — which is why converting is usually easier than fighting it.
Will I lose quality?
Not visibly. Conversion runs at 90% quality, the point where the eye cannot tell the JPG from the original. You can raise it to 100% in the advanced settings if the file is heading for a large print.
Can I convert several photos at once?
Yes. Drop the whole album: every photo shows up in a queue with its before and after size, and the "Download all" button hands you one ZIP.
How do I stop my iPhone from making HEIC files?
On the phone: Settings → Camera → Formats → "Most Compatible". New pictures are then saved straight to JPG; the ones you already took stay HEIC and go through this converter.
