Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between EAN-13 and Code 128?
EAN-13 is the 13-digit retail standard you see at supermarket checkouts (UPC-A is its 12-digit North American cousin). Code 128 encodes letters as well as digits, which makes it the right choice for internal references, shipping labels and asset tags.
Can I invent an EAN number to sell in shops?
No. Retail EAN and UPC numbers are issued by GS1, and retailers verify them. Use this tool to print barcodes for numbers you legitimately own, or Code 128 codes for your own internal stock system.
What size should I print a barcode?
A nominal EAN-13 is 37.3 × 25.9 mm. Do not go below about 80% of that, keep the quiet zone (white margin) on both sides, and print in solid black on white for reliable scanning.
Why is my barcode rejected as invalid?
Each format has strict rules: EAN-13 needs exactly 13 digits with a valid check digit, UPC-A needs 12. The tool tells you when the value does not match the chosen format.
