About this tool

A PDF sent by email can be read by anyone it reaches, intentionally or not. This tool encrypts your PDF with a password: without it, the document simply will not open. That is the minimum precaution for payslips, contracts, medical letters and anything containing personal data.

The encryption is applied inside your browser, which means neither the file nor the password is ever transmitted to anyone — not even to us. You can also set an owner password to control permissions such as printing.

Frequently asked questions

What level of protection is used?

The PDF standard's own AES encryption. The contents are unreadable without the password, including for software trying to open the file another way.

What happens if I forget the password?

There is no back door. Without the password the document cannot be recovered, so store it in a password manager as soon as you set it.

Does the recipient need special software?

No. Every PDF reader — Adobe, Chrome, Safari, Preview, mobile viewers — knows how to open an encrypted PDF; it will simply ask for the password.

What is the owner password for?

The open password controls who can read the file; the optional owner password controls what they can do with it, such as printing or copying text.

Is it really free, with no sign-up?

Yes — the tool is free, needs no account and has no usage limit. Processing happens locally in your browser, so your data never leaves your device.
